Faust: "I, Johannes Faust, do call upon thee, Mephistopheles!"

Mephistopheles:
Eu sou o espírito que sempre nega!
I am the spirit that ever denies!
E justamente assim: pois tudo que nasce
And justly so: for all that is born
Merece ser destruído em desprezo
Deserves to be destroyed in scorn
Portanto seria melhor se nada houvesse sido criado
Therefore 'twere best if nothing were created
Destruição, pecado, perversidade – claramente declarado
Destruction, sin, wickedness - plainly stated
Tudo aquilo que vocês como mal têm classificado

Mefistófeles: "e agora, Fausto. O que que tu gostaria que Mefisto fizesse?"
Mephistopheles: "now then, Faustus. What wouldst thou have mephisto do?"
Fausto:
Faust:
"Eu te ordeno, Mefisto, espere por mim enquanto vivo... Para fazer qualquer coisa que Fausto comande. Que o seja fazer a lua cair da esfera exterior, ou o oceano submergir o mundo. Entregue estas notícias ao grande Lúcifer: Diga que rendo minha alma. De tal modo que ele me poupe vinte e quatro anos, permitindo-me viver em toda voluptuosidade, tendo a ti sempre de atender a mim. Para me dar o que quer que eu peça."
"I charge thee, Mephisto, wait upon me while I live... To do whatever faustus shall command. be it to make the moon drop from outer sphere, or the ocean to overwhelm the world. go bear these tidings to great lucifer: say he surrenders up his soul. so that he shall spare him four and twenty years, letting him live in all voluptiousness, having thee ever to attend on me. to give me whatsoever I shall ask."

Mefistófeles: "Eu irei"
Mephistopheles: "I will."

Espírito sublime, tu me deste tudo
Sublime spirit, thou hast given me all
Tudo pelo que te supliquei, não em vão
All for which I besought thee, not in vain
Tu revelaste teu semblante no fogo
Didst thou reveal thy countenance in the fire
Tu me deste natureza para um reinado
Thou hast given me nature for a kingdom
Com o poder para aproveitar e sentir
With the power to enjoy and feel
Apenas um visitante de arrepiante perplexidade
Only a visit of chilling bewilderment
Tu então trouxeste todas as criaturas vivas
Thou bringest all the living creatures
E me ensinou a conhecer meus irmãos no ar,
And taught me to know my brothers in the air
Nas águas profundas e nos abrigos silenciosos
In the deep waters and in the silent coverts
Quando através da floresta a tempestade se enfurece

Desenraizando os pinhos gigantes que, em sua queda,
Uprooting the giant pines which in their fall
esmagando, arrastam abaixo galhos e troncos vizinhos.
Crushing, drag down neighboring boughs and trunks
Cujo crescente relâmpago surdo estremece as colinas
Whose hollow thunder shake the hills
Então tu me guiaste ao abrigo de uma gruta
Then thou dost lead me to a sheltering cave

Sombras prateadas, fantasmas de um mundo derradeiro
Silver shadows, phantoms of a bygone world
Que permitem a austera alegria da meditação
Which allay the austere joy of meditation

Agora percebo inteiramente que o homem

Jamais poderá gozar da perfeição

Humanidade, aquele cosmos tolo
Mankind, that foolish cosmos
Sempre agindo como incompleto
Always acts as incomplete
Ele pensou ser
He thought himself to be
Eu sou parte daquela parte que era absoluta
I am part of that part which was the absolute
Uma parte da escuridão que deu origem à luz
A part of that darkness which gave birth to light
A arrogante luz que iria disputar
The arrogant light which would dispute
O posto ancestral da mãe noite
Ancient rank of mother night
Portanto espero que não demore muito até que
Therefore I hope it won't be long before
Com sua matéria ela pereça cada vez mais!
With matter it shall perish evermore!

Fausto: "Então, ainda busco a força, a razão que governa o fluxo da vida, e não apenas sua aparência exterior."
Faust: "so, still I seek the force, the reason governing life's flow, and not just its external show."
Mefistófeles: "A força que governa? A razão? Certas coisas não podem ser saibas; Estão fora do seu alcance mesmo quando expostas."
Mephistopheles: "the governing force? She reason? some things cannot be known; they are beyond your reach even when shown."
Fausto: "Por que seria assim?"
Faust: "why should that be so?"
Mefistófeles: "Elas jazem além das fronteiras que as palavras podem nomear; E homens podem apenas compreender aqueles pensamentos que a linguagem pode expressar."
Mephistopheles: "they lie outside the boundaries that words can address; and man can only grasp those thoughts which language can express."
Fausto: "O que? Quer dizer que palavras são ainda maiores que homens?"
Faust: "what? Do you mean that words are greater yet than man?"
Mefistófeles: "De fato que são."
Mephistopheles: "indeed they are."
Fausto: "Então e o desejo? Afeição, dor ou pesar? Não posso descrevê-los,  contudo sei que estão no meu peito. O que estes são?"
Faust: "then what of longing. Wffection, pain or grief? I can't describe these, yet I know they are in my breast. what are they?""
Mefistófeles: "Sem substância, como a névoa."
Mephistopheles: "without substance, as mist is."
Fausto: "Nesse caso homens são apenas ar, também!"
Faust: "in that case man is only air as well!
